YouTube workouts undoubtedly offer lots of advantages for beginners getting into fitness, especially in January when all the gyms are bursting at the seams with people dutifully fulfilling their resolutions. You get the benefits of attending a fitness class (being told what to do and how long to do it for) without the downsides (having to work out with strangers at a potentially inconvenient time). All for free!
However, it’s fair to say that along with a plentiful amount of wheat, there is also an awful lot of chaff on YouTube. And looking through the videos to find the former can take a frustrating amount of time, especially when you’re in gym gear and ready to go.
Fortunately, other people have done that work for you. Here are the five most popular workout videos of January 2018 so far. Enjoy.
1. 30 Minute Les Mills GRIT Cardio Workout
The most popular workout in all of YouTube land, this 30-minute HIIT session is a collaboration between actor Nina Dobrev, Reebok and Les Mills. The workout is made up solely of bodyweight exercises, so you can do it at home with no equipment. That said, it involves an awful lot of jumping, so maybe warn the people in the flat below if you’re tackling it at home.
2. Grace Fit UK – Booty Workout
If you’re all about the booty – and who isn’t? – then give this four-move workout from Grace Fit a go. The actual workout doesn’t start until around eight minutes into the video, so you might want to skip that part, unless you’re all about the preamble as well.
3. Bright Side – 5-Minute Workout
Seven exercises in just five minutes that anyone can do. We won’t spoil the surprise about what those exercises are, but let’s just say fans of the plank are in for a treat. Actually, we are going to spoil it – they’re all different types of planks. Your core is going to take a pasting.
4. FitnessBlender – 10 Min Abs Workout
Ten straight minutes of abs action. Sounds tough. Is tough. It’s all bodyweight exercises, so you can follow this workout anywhere. Just grab a mat, or move to the room in your house with the comfiest carpet and prepare to feel the burn.
5. Absolute Beginners HIIT Workout – The Body Coach
This workout from Joe Wicks was released in February last year, so it’s testament to its quality that it remains in the top five most popular videos this January. It’s four rounds of five exercises, doing 30sec of work and resting for 30sec. If you’re looking to get into HIIT, this is a great place to start, especially because you get to watch Wicks’s luxurious locks bounce around the screen while you do it.
